Herod’s Gate (Gate of Fishes)

We are still in the movement of the blessing of the 7 gates of Jerusalem, and Gate Number 6 is the Herod’s Gate or the Gate of the Fishes. This gate, which was constructed during the Ottoman era, was a crucial component of Jerusalem’s northern defensive system and a strategically significant entry point. It is located close to the entrance of Fishes, another important aspect.

In ancient Israel, fishing was an important trade, especially along the Sea of Galilee. The city and its people were supported by the trade and commerce made possible by Jerusalem’s gates, such as the Gate of Fishes, which served as a religious and cultural hub. It is thought that the Gate of Fishes was situated close to a fish market, where local rivers and seas could supply fish to the city.

This reminds us of the time in the Bible when the Lord Jesus caught fish miraculously (Luke 5:4–7). A tremendous miracle gives us an important lesson about the true purpose of life, which you may learn more about on Sunday, 16 March. This time, we will concentrate on Herod’s Gate (below) as we continue with the Blessing of the Seven Gates of Jerusalem.

Come experience the blessing of this gate of Jerusalem with us at the Universal Church near you. You will also gain a deeper understanding of the significance of this biblical and historical event and how it applies to us today.
