Sunday, February 16, we continued our special series, Blessing of the Seven Gates of Jerusalem, with an emphasis on the Dung Gate, also called the Refuse Gate. It was reconstructed under Nehemiah’s leadership following the Babylonian exile and is referenced in the Book of Nehemiah (3:13–14) as one of the gates from the Second Temple period. Its name comes from the fact that it was historically the gate used to remove trash and junk from the city.

The Dung Gate was the main entryway to one of Jerusalem’s holiest sites, despite its unattractive moniker. Being the nearest gate to the Temple, it represented that God is close to those who are frequently disregarded and hated because they often have the humility needed to give their life to Him.
You can discover that you’re lugging around spiritual or emotional trash, including sin, doubts, hurts, or traumas. You might also retain tangible clutter, such as outdated documents, clothing you no longer use, or even unmet church goals. Perhaps you think life isn’t worth living because you feel unwelcome or unworthy, rejected by both family and society.
“He lifts the needy out of the ash heap and raises the poor out of the dust,” according to the Bible, so that He can sit him with princes—with the princes of His people. (Psalm 113:7-8).
