A REPEATING HISTORY

Have you ever had the impression that you are dealing with the identical issues that your family’s earlier generations faced? Maybe it’s a never-ending cycle of financial hardships, health issues, strained relationships, fear, or repeated failures. A repeating history.

A lot of people have burdens that started long before they were born. The Bible indicates that spiritual struggles can impact families from one generation to the next, even though they might not comprehend why some circumstances recur. Many people call this a “hereditary curse”.

The surroundings of a family have a significant impact. A person’s thoughts and actions can be influenced by the words they hear, the values they are taught, and the examples they see at home. A family can be strengthened by positive influences, but if harmful tendencies are not addressed, they can also be handed down.

The power of words is one area that can have a long-lasting effect. If a youngster hears remarks like “You will never succeed,” “You are just like your father,” or “You are worthless” on a regular basis, they may start to believe them.

These remarks might eventually lead to feelings of insecurity, dread, and a bad self-image, which makes them live within the constraints imposed on them.

What Now?

According to Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Words have power. They can either leave wounds that impact a person’s decisions and future, or they can bring life, confidence, and encouragement.

God’s words, however, are more powerful than any unfavourable statement made about your life. He doesn’t judge you based on your history, your errors, or what other people think of you. Rather, He recognises the potential He has given you.

The Gideon narrative is a potent illustration of this. Gideon thought of himself as the weak and unimportant member of his family when God summoned him, but God had a different idea. “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior,” he told him (Judges 6:12). God saw Gideon’s potential while he concentrated on his shortcomings.

It still holds true today. Your future need not be determined by the difficulties your family has endured. Your identity does not have to be dictated by the words that are shouted over you. You can overcome the cycles that have impacted your life by having faith in the Lord Jesus.
