Welcome to Our Church
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) is a contemporary, evangelical, biblically-based church, actively involved in numerous national outreach projects caring for people’s spiritual, emotional and physical needs.
The Church was established in 1977 by evangelist Pastor Edir Macedo, who saw the need to reach out to the poor and neglected, offering them practical support and spiritual guidance to help uplift and transform their lives. The UCKG has churches in more than 30 African countries as well as Kenya.
The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) was formed in 1977, in Brazil. It owes its origins to a successful evangelistic programme conducted by Bishop Robert McAlister, a Canadian missionary in the Pentecostal tradition. Edir Macedo – who went on to found UCKG – was one of the early converts. With the blessing of Bishop McAlister, he started to hold services under a small park shelter in Rio de Janeiro. His passion was to reach out to needy, less privileged people who were often excluded by established religions. As Pastor Macedo’s services grew in popularity, he used cinemas and local halls to accommodate growing congregations, attracting people from the streets to the expanding movement. Shortly afterwards the UCKG officially opened its first church inside a funeral parlour.
UCKG in Africa
The first church in Africa was established in Angola in 1992 and the same year a bishop and pastor arrived in Johannesburg and started evangelical work from a building in Bezuidenhout Valley. The Cenacle of the Holy Spirit in Soweto is the largest church in the area and is modelled on the UCKG’s Cenacle in Rio de Janerio, Brazil. The word “cenacle” means “upper room” and refers to the dining room in Jerusalem where Christ and His disciples met and where the Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost. All the UCKG’s major churches are referred to as Cenacles of the Holy Spirit. The UCKG churches nationally hold services every day. Bishops and pastors are all trained “people of God” who have embraced the call to serve their communities. These dedicated people are available round-the-clock, to relate to, empathize with, and assist anyone seeking help. Besides “saving souls”, the church is committed to offering relevant, practical support, often at grass-roots level.
